The Firstborn

• The identity of the Son
• The meaning of firstborn
  • sometimes, the one born first
  • but usually, it’s the heir

The Firstborn of Creation

• The image of the invisible God
  • humans created in the image of God
  • Jesus is the true image of God
• This is reinforced in what follows
  • He created all things
  • all creation is for Him
• The implications

The Firstborn of the Dead

• He deals with human rebellion
• He is the heir of the new creation
  • He is not just resuscitated
  • He brings in the resurrection (the new creation)
• The implications

Who is Jesus?

• It’s important to get this right
  • He’s more than a good moral teacher
  • He’s more than my personal servant
• It’s important to submit to Him

If you could have one wish …

The Thanksgiving

• A church they hadn’t visited
• Yet, they know about
  • their faith
  • their love
  • their hope
• And, they thank God
  • Ezekiel 36:25-27
  • Philippians 2:12-13

The Prayer

• The knowledge of His will
  • not so much in individualistic term
  • but God’s purposes for and within His world
• In all spiritual wisdom and understanding
  • knowing what the Bible says
  • and being transformed by that
• That you may live a life worthy of the Lord – that is, that God may continue the work He has begun
  • bearing fruit in every good work
  • growing in the knowledge of God
  • being strengthened for endurance and patience
  • giving thanks to the Father – who
    • gives a share in the inheritance of the saint
    • rescues into His kingdom
    • provides redemption in Jesus
    • gives the forgiveness of sins
